Thursday, July 2. Day 2 on the PCT. Today’s mileage – 8.1; total trip miles – 17.6.

Today once again dawned dry and sunny, and we looked forward to a net downhill hike for the day. The elevations for our first 6 hiking days range mostly from 7000′ – 9000′. At midday, we entered the Granite Chief Wilderness during a long downhill stretch, and had lunch beside the American River. Lisa started a daily routine of chatting with and photographing 1-2 thruhikers* per day. Today we met Petracor and Middy (pictured). Wildflowers abounded throughout; pictured is a white Mariposa Lily.

We camped for the night at Five Lakes Campsite and made/enjoyed a small campfire with some other hikers.

*What’s a thruhiker, you ask? Someone who walks the entire length of a trail in a 12 month period. Most PCT thruhikers travel northbound (NOBO) from the US/Mexico border to the US/Canada border (2,650 miles/ est 6 months), starting in April. Some travel southbound (SOBO) from Canada. Others do a “Flip Flop” hike, going north from Mexico for a ways, then getting to the Canada border heading south. This is typically done to avoid snow conditions or forest fires.

Love ya miss ya thanks for being here.
